Rainwater Tanks

Rainwater Tank South Australia has more rainwater tanks than any other State, providing additional water by harnessing the rain collected off roofs. These are used widely in areas where there is limited access to reticulated water.

Meeting the Challenge

Strategy 42: Commencing in July 2006, most new homes in South Australia will be required to have a rainwater tank plumbed into the house for some domestic uses. This should provide an additional 4,000 ML of water per year by 2025 and is likely to encourage the further uptake of rainwater tanks in existing developments.

Completion date: Ongoing from July 2006

Lead agency: Department of Water, Land & Biodiversity Conservation

Reports, progress and links:

On 1 July 2006 it became mandatory in selected areas of South Australia to install a rainwater tank and have it plumbed into the house for new developments (and home extensions greater than 50 m2).

The new regulatory requirements are called up under the South Australian version of the Building Code of Australia 2006. SA Water in consultation with the Plumbing Industry Association of South Australia has published a Plumbers Guide to assist plumbers, homeowners, builders, rainwater tank manufactures and suppliers with acceptable solutions for installing rainwater supply systems.

All tenders called by the Housing Trust from 1 July 2005 have specified the requirement to install a 1000 litre rainwater tank plumbed to the toilet.
