Natural Resources Management Boards

South Australia now has Australia’s most comprehensive natural resources management (NRM) legislation – establishing a new structure for the ecologically sustainable development of the State.

Meeting the Challenge

Strategy 6: The Natural Resources Management Act 2004 will deliver an integrated and transparent natural resources management system which aims to ensure South Australia’s resources are used sustainably. This structure replaces the current system of more than 70 boards located around the State which separately manage issues relating to water, pest plants and animals and soil conservation.

Completion date: Ongoing

Lead agency: Department of Water, Land & Biodiversity Conservation

Reports, progress and links:

This strategy was completed on 1 July 2005 when the Natural Resources Management Boards became operational.

Natural Resources Management Boards have been established in 8 regions of South Australia, including in the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges, and the South Australian Murray Darling Basin which supply Adelaide’s water. The Boards undertake various activities consistent with their region’s NRM plan developed in consultation with the community. Water allocation planning for prescribed water resources areas such as the River Murray, Eastern and Western Mount Lofty Ranges, are good examples. Water allocation plans seek to ensure prescribed water resources are shared and sustainably managed and used, including for agricultural purposes.

Both the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges, and the South Australian Murray Darling Basin Natural Resources Management Boards also have involvement in a broad range of projects and activities that align with many of Water Proofing Adelaide’s other goals, often in support of other dedicated stakeholders. For example:

Activities in which the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board is engaged include –

· Our Patch / Catchment Care program

· Waterwatch

· Stormwater pollution prevention projects

· Stormwater reuse projects

· Small community grants

Activities in which the SA Murray Darling Basin Natural Resources Management Board is engaged include -

· Catchment Care and Water Watch

· Irrigation management

· Delivery in SA of the Community Stream Sampling and Salinity Mapping project

· Involvement in The Living Murray Initiative
