On average the River Murray provides about 40% of Adelaide’s mains water. However, in drought years, this can be as high as 90%.
The Murray also supports a large number of country towns, rural communities and regional industries and is essential to the social wellbeing and economic prosperity of the State.
The stresses on the River Murray have become increasingly evident with rising salinity, the dieback of dependent ecosystems and increasing pollution. Our challenge is to protect the river and to restore its health for the future. Much work is already under way.
