WPA - Progress & Implementation - Responsible Water Use - Community Purpose Water Use

Drinking water substitution

A number of projects are being explored to substitute mains water for recycled water and stormwater. These include smaller projects to harvest rainwater, through to significant projects to water some of Adelaide’s most prominent landscapes.

Meeting the Challenge

Strategy 35: Mains water used for community purposes may, in some situations, be substituted with lower quality water such as recycled water, rainwater and stormwater.

Completion date: Ongoing

Lead agency: SA Water

Reports, progress and links:

The Glenelg to Adelaide Park Lands reuse scheme will provide extra treatment facilities and a 30 kilometre pipeline network from the plant to the Adelaide parklands to enable 4000 million litres of treated water to be recycled (see Strategy 55).

The Water Proofing the South project (see Strategy 27 and 55) also includes replacing potable water with recycled water for use at Noarlunga Centre, parks and reserves owned by City of Onkaparinga and a third pipe residential reuse scheme.

Water Proofing Northern Adelaide (refer Strategy 55) has received funding from the National Water Commission. The project substitutes stormwater for potable water in the Council areas of Playford, Salisbury and Tea Tree Gully.

Strategy 36: Legislation that provides the cities of Port Adelaide/Enfield and Adelaide with free water will be reviewed in consultation with the councils.

Completion date: 2006

Lead agency: SA Water/Department of Environment and Heritage

Reports, progress and links:

Under the Adelaide Park Lands Act 2005 on-going arrangements for the City of Adelaide were confirmed and arrangements have now been finalised. Review of Port Adelaide Enfield has occurred and negotiations are taking place.
