Australia has introduced national mandatory water efficiency labelling and standards ( WELS). This applies to all showerheads, washing machines, toilets, dishwashers, urinals and some types of taps. In addition, the scheme includes minimum water efficiency standards for toilets and voluntary water efficiency labels on flow control devices.
Meeting the Challenge

Strategy 30: The Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme will allow public and community groups to choose water efficient appliances when installing or replacing systems within public buildings.
Completion date: 2007
Lead agency: Commonwealth Government |
Reports, progress and links:
See comments on Strategy 15. The WELS scheme contributes to water efficiency in a range of settings, including public buildings.
Following the successful introduction of the WELS scheme nationally, detailed investigation and other required work to support the expansion of the scheme is occurring and is being managed by the WELS Regulator. This includes the addition of further ranges of water-using devices in a labelling scheme, and minimum water efficiency standards for some devices. New product registration and water efficiency standards are expected to be introduced in a staggered fashion, subject to relevant Standards processes and test procedures being available. |
