Environmental Management Systems (EMS) are voluntary systems for assessing, and appropriately managing and monitoring, sites which have a potential impact on the environment. This proactive approach to managing environmental impacts is increasing throughout the world.

Strategy 22: Large commercial and industrial water users will be encouraged to adopt environmental management systems to both minimise environmental impact and optimise water recycling and water use.

A partnership has been developed with BusinessSA, supplementing its existing workshop program with seminars on water efficiency, conservation and demand side management.
SA Water will assist in the promotion of the Environmental Management System (EMS) course developed by BusinessSA via the proposed business newsletter and SA Water’s Key Account Manager as part of scheduled contact with major customers. SA Water will provide speakers from SA Water’s Waste Minimisation Unit for the EMS course run by Business SA.
SA Water is currently in discussions with BusinessSA to determine how to best assist in promoting and resourcing the program.

Strategy 23: The SA Government and industry will take the lead in encouraging the development of environmental management systems for commercial and industrial premises.

Water Efficiency Plans are being prepared by SA Water’s top 53 customers. The plans will identify and prioritise water saving opportunities. SA Water has introduced a service for major customers (the Business Saver Service) that assists them in identifying waste minimisation and water conservation opportunities.
